Tuesday 04-21-2009 11:13am MT
In the wake of the murder of a photo radar van operator in Phoenix, the Department of Public Safety photo radar vehicles operated by Redflex have been taken out of service – at least for now.

The killing is also impacting photo radar in Tucson. The vans that snap photos of speeders for TPD were taken off the streets last Sunday night.

American Traffic Solutions, a Scottsdale company, has the contract with T-P-D to operate the van.The company says its taking a look at their procedures, and working with law enforcement,  to make sure their operators are safe.

How to legally trigger traffic lights to change from red to green
Tuesday 04-07-2009 12:16pm MT
This is not related to traffic cameras themselves, but will help ensure the timely flow of traffic, especially when you are on a motorcycle or scooter, or you get stuck behind one in the first position at a stop light.
Sept. 30, 2010 latest date for speed camera repeal
Thursday 03-26-2009 12:09pm MT
(AP) The proposed date to end Arizona's speed camera program on highways statewide would be moved back to Sept. 30, 2010 under the latest version of pending repeal legislation, endorsed by a House committee by a 6-4 vote Wednesday.

The September date is later than a July date that was proposed last week.

Rep. Sam Crump originally wanted repeal immediately, but the Anthem Republican said he went along with the delay because of concerns that the state could have to pay the contractor if the 2-year contract is canceled early

Crump said the September date is two years from the program's 2008 launch and that July 2008 was when Scottsdale-based Redflex was chosen to operate the camera program.

The bill's new version also omits proposed new sign requirements.

JP declares photo-enforcement program invalid
Thursday 01-29-2009 11:24am MT

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona's new photo-enforcement law has been declared unconstitutional by a Maricopa County justice of the peace.

Judge John Keegan has issued a court order declaring the state law runs counter to the U.S. Constitution because it denies equal protection under the law and violates the state Constitution's clause on equal privileges and immunities.

Keegan's order was issued Dec. 9, and he estimates he's thrown out 300 to 400 photo-enforcement tickets since that time.

Now, he's waiting for a government agency to pick up the challenge so that his cause can move through the court system.

Keegan, whose court is located in Surprise, has jurisdiction over Peoria, Sun City and north Glendale. The photo-enforcement tickets that come into his court mostly are snapped on Loop 101.

Higher DPS limit would have saved 6,400 tickets
Thursday 01-29-2009 11:24am MT
PHOENIX (AP) More than 6,400 Arizona drivers would not have been issued speeding tickets last fall if a new 1 mph higher threshold for speed camera activations was in place at the time.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety announced on Jan. 8 that it was raising the cutoff for issuing tickets using its new speed enforcement cameras on state highways from 10 mph to 11 mph over the posted speed limit.

If that cutoff had been in place from mid-October through November, 6,436 drivers would have been spared $165 fines.

That's more than 30 percent of all drivers who were nabbed by the state's new speed cameras during that time. Another 15,000 motorists were clocked at higher speeds.

DPS has issued more than 74,000 notices and received payment on about 8,300 tickets through December. The program began in mid-September.

As Many as 1,000 Photo Radar Tickets May Be Tossed Out of Court
Friday 01-23-2009 11:15am MT
As many as 1,000 photo-radar tickets could be thrown out of Tucson City Court, after it was discovered a process server faked affidavits of service for people that were supposed to be personally given citations. City Court officials tell 790 KNST News, the employee has been fired from the subcontractor responsible for service those citations. The case has been turned over to Tucson Police for investigation.
Ariz. House Panel OKs Ban on Highway Speed Cameras
Friday 01-23-2009 6:11am MT

A bill to prohibit use of speed cameras on Arizona highways easily cleared its first legislative hurdle on Thursday.

A House committee voted 5-2 for the bill that now goes to the full House following what is usually a routine legal review. However, it's not clear when the full House will consider the measure because lawmakers are emphasizing work on the state's budget crisis.

Supporters of the Department of Public Safety's new program of deploying stationary and mobile cameras along state highways say they slow motorists down and improve highway safety.

Opponents say the program is fraught with problems and clearly aimed more at generating revenue for the state than increasing public safety.
