Welcome to Medical Minute with Paul Birmingham, brought to you by Oro Valley Hospital.
I知 here with Dr. Paul Butler, a board certified gastroenterologist with Northwest allied physicians. Doctor, who is considered a high risk patient?
There痴 several groups who are at high risk. First of all anyone who has a personal history of colon polyps or colon cancer, is predisposed to developing colon cancer again. Those patients who have a long standing history of crohn痴 disease of the colon, or ulcerative colitis of the colon, two of the inflammatory bowel diseases, these patients are potentially at very high risk. Especially after they致e had the disease for fifth-teen or twenty years. Those with a family history of colon cancer or high risk polyps are an increased risk, especially If they are first degree relative had the disease and they had it at age sixty or less. Finally there are the hereditary syndromes the familial polyposis syndrome and the hereditary non polyposis colorectal cancer syndrome. These are patients, and families that are at high risk.
