Welcome to Medical Minute with Paul Birmingham, brought to you by Oro Valley Hospital.
I知 here with Dr. Lorraine Manciet, she is a board certificated Family Medicine Physician, part of our ongoing series on diabetes. Dr. Let痴 talk a little about the question of diet and what type of diet should someone with diabetes sustain?
A good healthy diet it would be concentrating on vegetables more that we normally do. Making sure that the protein that one eats is lower in fat, and then the carbohydrates they eat are healthy or complex carbohydrates. We know which are the complex carbohydrates, by looking at something called the Glycemic Index. A Gylcemic Index is something that tells us how quickly or slowly carbohydrates are turned into sugar, slower is better. Because it痴 just like rainfall in the desert, a slow gentle rainfall nourishes the desert the same amount of rain within 10 minutes create flash floods that are destructive.
